Investing in Wind

There are two statistics that every investor needs to know about wind energy:

- In 1997, just 1% of the world’s electricity needs were filled by wind power.
- Wind energy is the fastest growing resource sector in terms of investment dollars, with capacity accelerating by just under 30% annually.

Those figures suggest that wind energy is an undeniably promising bet for high returns.

A closer look reveals even more astonishing facts. For example, the Global Wind Energy Council reported that wind power capacity in North America grew 33% in 2006 to 13,062 MW. Wind power in the United Kingdom and France, meanwhile, grew by 48% and 107%, respectively. These leaps in growth in the EU demonstrate a likely future market scenario for North America. That’s because while wind energy is not new, it’s in the last decade that it has begun to take root as a viable source of power in North America.
